After joining the University of Kentucky faculty in 2003, Dr. Hastings established a research program focused on nanoscale materials and devices. He has served as an investigator on 35 research awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, the National Institutes of Health, and other agencies. He has published over 70 journal articles, contributed to over 100 conference presentations, and holds four patents. Dr. Hastings is currently leading research efforts in the areas of nanoscale 3D printing, x-ray optics, nanophotonics for digital imaging, and optical medical diagnostics. He is a recipient of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Young Faculty Award and the NSF CAREER Award. He currently serves as the Reese S. Terry Professor of Electrical Engineering and as Director of the Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering. He is a key collaborator in programs focused on antiviral masks and filters, light-driven hydrogen energy production, nanomagnetic systems, and 3D hyperspectral imaging. He also serves as the co-director for KY Multiscale, one of sixteen sites in NSF’s National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure Network. Dr. Hastings received the B.S. in physics from Centre College and the M.S. in electrical engineering from Purdue University. He received the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology based on his contributions to high-precision nanofabrication and nanophotonics.
